A neck rash is an inflammatory reaction of the skin covering the neck, which includes the front of the neck between the head and the chest and the nape of the neck just below the hairline in the back.
Neck rashes vary greatly in appearance, location and severity depending on the underlying cause. Neck rashes can be red, white, purple or silver in color, and raised, bumpy or flat in texture. They can appear as dots or spots or occur in a large, continuous area. Neck rashes can also include flushing and scaling or flaking off of skin cells. Neck rashes are commonly due to acne, dermatitis, mild allergic reactions, and inflammatory disorders. Most neck rashes do not cause any permanent harm and they usually disappear on their own or by following the treatment plan outlined by your health care provider. However, some rashes may be caused by a serious underlying infectious disease, such as meningitis, or an allergic reaction accompanied by hives and anaphylaxis.
A rash of purple spots (petechiae) that occurs with a fever can indicate a serious, potentially life-threatening condition, such as bacterial meningitis. A neck rash that is associated with allergies combined with shortness of breath, wheezing, or swelling of the face, mouth or throat is also a symptom of a serious, potentially life-threatening condition called anaphylaxis.
The sun poses a variety of problems involving the skin, but there are a few that are unique to the neck. Poikiloderma of Civatte is a long-lasting, red rash that can appear on the neck in older adults due to cumulative sun damage, and it tends to affect women more often than men. Cutis rhomboidalis nuchae is also due to prolonged sun exposure and causes the skin to appear like well-creased leather. Small skin tags (acrochordons) will often grow on the neck as people age. Skin tags are not dangerous, but they are often unwanted for cosmetic reasons. Like other parts of the body that are chronically exposed to the sun, skin cancer can develop on the neck along with precancerous lesions such as actinic keratoses.
How do you know if a neck rash is serious? Most rashes are a result of a simple skin irritation. Individuals with sensitive skin are more prone to rashes and should exercise great care when using skin, body, and cleaning products. Because of their location, it makes perfect sense that a neck rash can be a direct result of an irritating fiber or material or clothing detergent. Tight clothing constructed from fabrics such as nylon constrict the skin from breathing and may cause heat rash in summer months. In addition to heat rash or skin allergy, a rash may be related to any of the following conditions:
Psoriasis
Impetigo
Measles
Insect bites
Scarlet fever
Hives
Scabies
Viruses
Poison oak or ivy
