There are innumerable skin disorders that can make your life miserable and pathetic. One such skin condition is the presence of round red rash on arms, legs, chest or all over body. It can be caused by a number of factors. The most important ones are discussed here. Go through them to enhance your knowledge and find out a correct reason in case you are facing such a discomfort.

Causes of Round Red Rash

Eczema
Eczema is a peculiar kind of inflammatory reaction of the skin which takes place in a few stages. It starts with the outbreak of tiny blisters that rise above the level of the skin. The second stage is called erythema or reddening of the blister. It gives rise to oval or round red rash on skin. It is followed by swelling or edema, formation of bumps and crusting over of the skin. The sixth and the final stage is lichenification, i.e. thickening and scaling of the affected skin. Mild to intense itching and stinging sensation are the characteristic signs of eczema. It may occur at any stage of life. Eczema is of several types such as atopic dermatitis, contact dermatitis, dyshidrotic eczema, seborrheic eczema, stasis dermatitis, etc. It is quite resistant to treatment and does not go away easily. Thus, eczema is the foremost reason behind the eruption of round red raised rash.

Fungal Infection
Fungal infection, most commonly ringworm is another major cause of round red rash occurring on skin. In medicine, ringworm is known as tinea. The infection causes the formation of red and ring-shaped rash on the body. The medical terms for fungal infection describes the part of the body under the effect of infection. For example, tinea capitis describes the presence of round red rash on head and scalp. Similarly, tinea corporis indicates red rash on the body and tinea pedis reports for fungal infection on the feet. Fungal infections are highly contagious. You can contract it from affected dogs, cats and other humans. The common medium of contraction are clothes, shoes, showers, etc. used by infected people.

Discoid Lupus
Discoid lupus is an inflammatory condition of the skin that is caused by auto-immune disorders. In auto-immune disorders, the immune system of the body starts destroying its own cells. Discoid lupus is symptomized by raised, somewhat red rash appearing on any part of the body. The most common areas of occurrence are scalp, face, chest and neck. The round red rash may be itchy and scaly. It usually gets worse on getting exposed to sun, ultraviolet and fluorescent light for a long time. When discoid lupus occurs on the scalp, it can cause alopecia, i.e, patchy and localized loss of hair. For diagnosis, dermatologists mainly rely on the biopsy of the rash to confirm it. It is performed under local anesthesia.

Wheals
The fluid build up on the skin caused by physical trauma to the skin and allergy against numerous irritating agents, better known as allergens, such as drugs, poison ivy, pollen grains, etc is described as wheals. These involve swelling in the papillary dermis of the skin. Wheals may occur as a result of injection of fluid with a subcutaneous syringe. Wheals can be oval, round, annular, gyrate or irregular in shape. The color of wheals may also range from pale to red. Wheals are generally well demarcated, itchy and accompanied with a stinging sensation. They usually disappear within a couple of days. In case of persistent wheals, medical treatment is necessary.

Folliculitis
The inflammation of one or more hair follicles is called folliculitis. It is usually caused by bacterial infection. The common symptoms of folliculitis are groups of small red bumps that develop around follicles of hair. These bumps are often filled with pus that frequently break and crust over. Such bumps are marked by reddening, inflammation, itching and tenderness. Folliculitis can affect anyone, irrespective of gender and age. Though it is found to appear on any body part, yet the common places of its occurrence are arms, face, armpits, scalp and legs. Folliculitis can further lead to boils and other serious complications resulting due to the migration of causative bacteria from the hair follicles to other body parts through bloodstream.
